We took our teenagers and a toddler to Casa de Campo, Dominican for a week at Christmas. Overall, we found this resort to be an excellent choice for a family vacation. Some comments on the basics, plus tips and highlights:
Lodging: we stayed in a villa and it made an enormous difference. Villas are spacious, attractive and include maid and butler service, car and golf cart. O... [more]urs had a pool and jacuzzi as well.
Service: everyone from our concierge to our villa staff to the folks at the stables and most restaurants were very service oriented. Having said that, overall they seem to lack the quantity of staff and the training to be able to really deliver. For example, on a few days they had no towels at the beach but came 20 minutes later with them. At the pool, you sometimes had to wait quite a while for a chair. Despite some spotty service at the beach restaurant, overall service was still pretty good.
Amenities: this is a great resort for younger children and particularly at holiday times they go out of their way to have a lot of activities and programs. (i.e., art projects, puppet shows). Babysitters are friendly, speak English and seem to have some experience. The golf was great. My husband said Dye Four was the best course he has played anywhere. The spa is not a full service spa and was a little disappointing but when you're getting your back rub after a long day at the beach, who can complain? Watching polo and going for a trail ride were fun diversions.
Food: we did not use the all inclusive plan. Our villa staff made breakfast every day and we certainly had a lot to eat. We submitted a fill my kitchen order in advance and had plenty of drinks and snacks in our villa for the week. we had a chef prepare dinner in our villa twice and it was above average. we recommend the restaurants at the marina. The marina has a really fun vibe at night. Altos de Chavon was a bit of a disappointment. It was a little sleepy at night and the food at La Piazetta and Sombrero was only fair. The beach restaurant, Pescador, is not so great and doesn't have a lot of choices. Tropicana, the main restaurant at the resort, was quite good.
Other: most visitors there spoke Spanish or were from New York. we ran into a few folks from the midwest and a number of Italian families who own homes there. Naturally, it helps to speak Spanish.

Overall Rating: 10 Location [10] • Room [10] • Service [10] • Value [10] I loved Casa Decampo. I was there for a week and the service was the best I have ever had. The white sand and clear water from the caribbean sea is great. The water is actually warm compared to the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. The weather was great the whole time. There are a lot of good restaurants and nightly entertainment. There is a bar in the pool and the rooms(villas) are great and co... [more]zy. You have big patio. Also there is a marina for you boat lovers. If you have children they have a great kids camp. They do alot of fun activities. There are alot of shops. And you get your own golf cart and they are pretty fast to get around the resort. There reaaly isn't a reason to go off the resort. They do have different tours you can take. It's a great place to golf and horseback ride. I would definately reccomend this resort. [less]
